The European Commission has approved a €150 million Romanian state aid scheme to support electricity storage projects.
The Commission said the measure will support the installation of at least 2174MWh of new electricity storage capacity.
Romania notified the scheme under the Clean Industrial Deal State Aid Framework adopted by the Commission in June 2025, the EU body added.
The aid will take the form of investment support through direct grants for new standalone battery energy storage systems.
The scheme will be financed through the EU Modernisation Fund.
Beneficiaries will be selected through a competitive tendering procedure.
The Commission said the measure is designed to help integrate variable renewable energy sources into Romania’s electricity system by increasing storage capacity.
The EU body added that the scheme complies with conditions set out in the Clean Industrial Deal State Aid Framework.
Aid will be granted through a competitive bidding process and must be awarded before 31 December 2030.
The Commission concluded that the scheme is necessary and proportionate to support the transition towards a net-zero economy and facilitate the development of economic activities linked to the Clean Industrial Deal.
