SSEN Transmission has begun early enabling works on its Spittal to Peterhead subsea cable project, marking the start of construction on the 203km, 2GW HVDC link.
The company said the route will run from the Banniskirk Hub in Caithness to the Netherton Hub in Aberdeenshire, including 166km subsea from Sinclair’s Bay to Rattray Head.
According to SSEN Transmission, all consenting decisions for the cable have been received, and the project will provide a secure path for renewable power from the north of Scotland to demand centres.
Contracts have been awarded to John Gunn & Sons in Caithness and Nicol of Skene in Aberdeen for onshore works, while NKT has signed a framework agreement and will undertake initial HVDC link activities.
Construction has started on access roads and junctions near the Peterhead landfall, with similar work in Caithness due later this month.

Darren Fennell, EVP and head of transmission at NKT, said the milestone supports expansion of the company’s activities in Scotland.
Peter-Jon Cowe, chief operating officer at Nicol of Skene, said the award recognises the firm’s technical capability and will deliver benefits for communities in Aberdeenshire.
Brendan Reynolds, project manager at John Gunn & Sons, stated that the contract offers opportunities to expand and upskill the workforce while supporting the Caithness and Highland supply chain.
