Germany will host the international North Sea Summit for the first time on 26 January to advance cooperation on offshore wind and hydrogen infrastructure.
The third edition of the summit will take place in Hamburg with invited heads of state and government, energy ministers from 11 countries and the European Commission, as well as over 100 company representatives, according to the material.
Federal chancellor Friedrich Merz (pictured) said collaboration in the North Sea is vital for a strong, secure and independent Europe.
He added that participants share the goal of “developing the North Sea into the largest reservoir of clean energy in the world”.
The meeting aims to improve cooperation among North Sea countries to drive expansion of offshore wind energy and hydrogen infrastructure and to pursue an efficient, interconnected energy system across the region.
The summit was first held in Esbjerg in 2022 and most recently in Ostend in 2023, having been created to reduce Europe’s dependence on fossil fuel imports following Russia’s war against Ukraine.
Talks will take place at Hamburg’s City Hall and Chamber of Commerce, and outcomes will be set out in intergovernmental declarations with expectations for cooperation agreements between states and industry.
