Iberdrola and Microsoft sign Spanish PPAs

Iberdrola and Microsoft have signed two long-term power purchase agreements covering 150MW from wind farms in Spain as part of a wider partnership on energy and artificial intelligence.

The companies said the PPAs cover the Iglesias wind farm in Burgos and the El Escudo wind farm in Cantabria, marking the first PPAs between the two parties in Europe.

They added that the new contracts build on three existing PPAs in the US, bringing the total contracted capacity between the companies in the US and Europe to around 500MW.

Iberdrola said the partnership also includes extending its use of Microsoft’s Azure Cloud, Data and AI products, including the deployment of Microsoft Copilot and security and compliance solutions.

The group added that critical systems from business areas across Iberdrola have already been migrated to the Azure cloud as part of its digital transformation.

Samer Abu-Ltaif (pictured, right), president, Microsoft Europe, Middle East, and Africa, said: “This partnership with Iberdrola is a bold commitment to accelerating the energy transition and digital transformation in the industry.”

He added: “By combining Iberdrola’s leadership in renewable energy with Microsoft’s cutting-edge cloud and AI technologies, we are not only advancing our sustainability goals but also empowering innovation and resilience for our customers and communities.”

Aitor Moso (pictured, right), director of the global Customers business at Iberdrola, said: “This collaboration will accelerate AI adoption across the Iberdrola Group to reinforce our leading digital capabilities and will strengthen our portfolio of renewable PPAs with Microsoft, in line with the companies’ firm commitment to combine strong increase in electricity consumption with full decarbonization.”

He added: “We are delighted to announce today the signature of our two first PPAs in Europe, expanding our global partnership.”
