The Irish wind industry has welcomed the publication of the Accelerating Infrastructure Report and Action Plan, calling it a key step towards energy independence.
Wind Energy Ireland said the report contains recommendations that would speed up planning for critical infrastructure, particularly projects to strengthen the electricity grid.
“Our system for delivering critical infrastructure in Ireland, including renewable energy, is not fit for purpose and this has been true for a long time,” said Noel Cunniffe (pictured), chief executive of Wind Energy Ireland.
He added that the report identifies actions that can accelerate clean electricity delivery, reinforce the grid and support greater electrification.
Cunniffe stated that detailed actions, timelines and accountability through DPER’s infrastructure division reflect strong government commitment.
He said the industry is ready to work with government to ensure the plan is delivered and marks a landmark on Ireland’s path to energy independence.
Cunniffe added that state agencies and departments need adequate funding and expertise to deliver the responsibilities set out in the report.
