Topsoe has inaugurated what it claims is Europe’s largest Solid Oxide Electrolyser Cell manufacturing facility in Herning, Denmark.
The company said the 500MW plant will produce high-efficiency SOEC stacks for industrial-scale green hydrogen projects, with scope to scale further.
Topsoe added that the factory represents its biggest investment to date and is backed by €94m from the EU Innovation Fund.
The company said the facility is designed to support decarbonisation of heavy industry, noting that hard-to-abate sectors account for about 30% of global CO₂ emissions.
Morten Bodskov, Denmark’s minister for industry, business and financial affairs, said inauguration was “a big day” for Herning and Denmark, adding that the factory “creates jobs, growth and a greener future”.
Roeland Baan, chief executive of Topsoe, said: “Our SOEC facility will be a game-changer for the energy transition. The technology’s unmatched efficiency is pivotal for scaling green hydrogen production for industrial decarbonization”.
Topsoe said the facility covers 23000m² and will support up to 10GW of installed capacity after ten years, enabling reduction of 15m tonnes of CO₂ annually.
The company added that offtake agreements are in place with First Ammonia in Texas and Forestal in Spain.
