Jan de Nul has launched its newest cable-laying vessel the Fleeming Jenkin at CMHI Haimen’s shipyard in China.
With a loading capacity of 28,000 tonnes and a length of 215 metres, the vessel is claimed by the Dutch company to be the largest of its type in the world.
The ceremony marks the start of final vessel construction including sea trials ahead of delivery in the second half of next year.
The Fleeming Jenkin, which is being constructed alongside sister vessel William Thomson, will then start its first assignment to help build new 2GW connections for offshore wind farms in the North Sea for Netherlands and German grid operator TenneT.
Jan de Nul director subsea cables offshore energy Wouter Vermeersch said: “The Fleeming Jenkin combines all the cable installation expertise we have built up over the past 15 years.
“The entire vessel and the technologies on board were designed by our in-house specialists. The result is a vessel that operates very efficiently, reducing both the cost price and the ecological footprint of our projects.”
