Qair UK, operating as Green Switch Capital, has secured ministerial consent for its 342MW Red Moss Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in South Lanarkshire.
The approval marks the company’s first Section 36 consent and represents a major step in strengthening the flexibility and resilience of the UK’s power system.
The Red Moss project will connect directly to the transmission grid, providing large-scale storage capacity capable of responding instantly to supply and demand fluctuations.
Located on a brownfield site close to key network infrastructure, the development will help manage grid constraints, reduce renewable curtailment and support a more secure, decarbonised electricity system.
Green Switch Capital worked with Renewable Planning Consultancy (RPC) throughout the planning process to ensure the project made productive use of previously developed land while minimising visual and environmental impacts.
The project also includes biodiversity enhancements in line with local and national sustainability objectives.
Pete McLaren, head of Scottish development at Qair UK, said: “Receiving consent for Red Moss is a landmark moment for Qair UK, Green Switch Capital and for Scotland’s energy transition.
“Its transmission connection and brownfield location make it a fantastic example of how battery storage can strengthen the grid while respecting the local environment.”
Red Moss BESS forms part of Qair Group’s growing international portfolio of renewable and storage assets.
The company continues to expand its UK development pipeline to deliver clean, flexible infrastructure that supports the transition to net zero and creates lasting value for local communities.
