SSE Renewables has completed its 101MW Yellow River Wind Project in County Offaly, which is now generating renewable power for homes and businesses across Ireland.
Located near Rhode, the 29-turbine development has entered full commercial operation, producing enough clean energy to power almost 75,000 homes annually.
The project is expected to displace nearly 70,000 tonnes of carbon emissions each year.
Delivery followed EirGrid’s completion of upgrade works at the Derryiron 110kV Transmission Station, enabling the site to move to a firm grid connection, along with detailed turbine commissioning checks.
SSE said the project strengthens Ireland’s energy security and supports national climate targets under the Climate Action Plan, helping advance the State’s goal of sourcing 80% of electricity from renewables by 2030.
Construction began in October 2022, with turbine installation commencing in December 2023 and first energisation achieved in December 2024.
At peak, the project supported up to 150 full-time construction jobs, representing around 400,000 recorded working hours.
Supply chain partners included Nordex Group as turbine supplier, Farrans Construction as civil contractor, Suir Engineering for electrical balance of plant, and Port of Galway as logistics partner.
SSE Renewables managing director Stephen Wheeler said the project’s completion “demonstrates our commitment to delivering Ireland’s climate and energy security goals”.
He said SSE will continue working with government, industry partners and communities to accelerate deployment of renewable energy through new onshore and offshore wind developments.
Heather Donald, director of onshore wind, solar and battery for SSE Renewables, said the project’s safe delivery after three years of construction was “a fantastic achievement for our entire team and supply chain partners”.
She added that Yellow River will create lasting local benefits through a multi-year community fund and sustained regional investment.
