RWE has commissioned its first wind farm in Rhineland-Palatinate with the completion of the 12MW Kail project on the Moselle plateau, around 50 kilometres south-west of Koblenz.
The three-turbine development was constructed in 12 months and will generate enough renewable electricity to power approximately 7,500 households each year.
RWE secured the project in Germany’s February 2024 onshore wind auction.
Katja Wunschel, chief executive of RWE Renewables Europe & Australia, said the achievement reflected “excellent cooperation” among local authorities, landowners, farmers, and the project team.
She said the project “supports our commitment to the expansion of renewables and creates significant added value for the region”, adding that neighbouring communities will receive an annual contribution of up to €60,000 from energy generation revenues.
Construction was carried out with a focus on environmental and resource efficiency, reusing materials and maintaining close coordination to avoid disturbance to archaeological sites.
Archaeologists from Rhineland-Palatinate examined and archived finds from nearby Bronze and Iron Age burial mounds and a Roman villa before works began.
The project attracted local interest, including visits from nursery school groups learning about renewable energy.
RWE said onshore wind remains central to its domestic expansion, with 150MW of new capacity under construction in Germany alongside 737MW already in operation.
