Repsol has approved construction of a 100MW renewable hydrogen electrolyser at its Cartagena industrial complex in eastern Spain.
The project, developed in partnership with Enagas Renovable, represents an investment of more than €300m and is scheduled to start operations in 2029.
Repsol said the facility will produce around 15,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen per year, avoiding up to 167,000 tonnes of CO2 annually.
The European Commission has designated the development a strategic project of common European interest, with €155m in funding provided through Spain’s Institute for the Diversification and Saving of Energy.
Enagas Renovable holds a 25% stake in the project, which is expected to create about 900 jobs across construction and operations.
Repsol described the electrolyser as a milestone in its plan to replace conventional hydrogen at its industrial sites and a cornerstone of the Hydrogen Valley of the Region of Murcia.
The company is Spain’s largest hydrogen producer and consumer, accounting for 60% of national output and 4% of Europe’s consumption.
