SRE picks Siemens Gamesa for Formosa 4

Synera Renewable Energy has selected Siemens Gamesa to supply 35 14MW turbines for the 495MW Formosa 4 offshore wind farm off Taiwan.

The machines will be delivered from Siemens Gamesa’s nacelle factory in Taichung, reinforcing the manufacturer’s local presence.

Formosa 4 was awarded capacity in Taiwan’s Phase 3 Zonal Development auction in 2022 and received its establishment permit in 2024, the first project among round one winners to reach this stage.

SRE chairperson Lucas Lin (pictured, far right) said: “Over the past six years, we have delivered Formosa 1, Taiwan’s first offshore wind farm, and Formosa 2, the first among Phase 2 projects to reach commercial operation. Now we’re building on that success with Formosa 4.”

He added: “Given the strong partnership forged with Siemens Gamesa during Formosa 1 and 2, we’re pleased to have them on board again for Formosa 4, deepening the collaboration and advancing sustainability together.”

SRE chief projects officer Sahand Holm (pictured, second from right) said the deal followed “a thoughtful and collaborative journey” between the two companies, adding that both teams had shown “dedication, professionalism, and perseverance”.

Siemens Gamesa global head of sales Mogens Jakobsen (pictured second left) said: “The Formosa 4 project reaffirms our commitment and will strengthen our local industrial nacelle production in Taichung further.”

The wind farm will be built off Miaoli County and is expected to generate enough electricity to power about 500,000 households annually.
