Enviromena has energised its 71MW Medebridge solar farm in Essex, backed by the UK’s largest corporate power purchase agreement with an educational institution.
From September, the 175-acre project will supply The University of Manchester with 65% of its electricity demand under a 10-year deal.
The agreement will cut the university’s carbon emissions by about 12,000 tonnes annually and provide power for 21,000 homes.
Enviromena said Medebridge will generate more than 72,500MWh of electricity a year, enough for 26,000 homes, and deliver a biodiversity net gain through habitat improvements.
Chief commercial officer Lee Adams said: “We’re incredibly proud to see Medebridge go live.
“It’s our largest and most complex project to date and a major step forward in the UK’s net-zero journey.
“By securing a long-term commitment with a top-tier academic institution, this project proves how large-scale renewables and corporate sustainability can align to deliver real impact.”
Chief operating officer Gary Hales said: “The energisation of Medebridge represents a huge achievement by everyone at Enviromena.
“Delivering a project of this scale without a single health and safety incident, and at such pace, is testament to the expertise and dedication of our team.”
University of Manchester vice-president for social responsibility Nalin Thakkar said the CPPA is a “landmark moment” in its decarbonisation strategy.
EDF structured and manages the CPPA, while Inspired advised the university and supported contract negotiations.
EDF PPA director Tom Abbott said: “By bringing power from Medebridge Solar Farm through this tailored CPPA, we’re showing how smart partnerships can unlock big wins for decarbonisation.”
Inspired managing director Richard Sullivan added: “CPPAs are an increasingly popular choice for organisations seeking to decarbonise as they offer up to 100% renewable power and much-needed additionality to the grid.”
Enviromena said it now manages nearly 400MWp of operational solar in the UK and has a 3GW pipeline across Europe.
