BayWa’s renewables arm has secured Section 36 planning consent for its 500MW Redshaw battery energy storage system in South Lanarkshire, Scotland.
The Redshaw facility will be the company’s largest BESS in Europe and is adjacent to Scottish Power Transmission’s planned 400/132kV Redshaw substation at the B6 boundary, a key constraint point between Scotland and England.
BayWa r.e. said the project will alleviate grid congestion, enhance energy security, and accelerate UK decarbonisation while delivering value for consumers.
Gemma Hamilton, head of development strategy and origination at BayWa r.e. UK, said: “Securing planning consent for Redshaw BESS is more than a milestone for our project: it is a commitment to the future stability of the UK grid and the acceleration of our clean energy transition.”
She added that planning approval was achieved “swiftly” through collaboration with the Scottish government, South Lanarkshire Council, statutory consultees, and the host community.
BayWa r.e. has pledged £50,000 a year through a Community Benefit Fund to support local initiatives and said ecological enhancements such as woodland creation, peatland restoration, and habitat management will deliver biodiversity gains.
Dr Daniel Gaefke, BayWa r.e. chief operating officer, said: “At 500MW, this facility will be our largest battery storage project in Europe. It is part of a growing portfolio of BESS projects, demonstrating our operational expertise and dedication to grid flexibility.”
