BayWa’s renewable energy arm is seeking consent for a 500MW battery energy storage system (BESS) in Scotland – the largest in its portfolio.
The Glasgow-based renewable energy company has submitted a Section 36 application to the Scottish government for the Redshaw BESS project.
The facility would be built on land approximately 3km south of Douglas, South Lanarkshire.
It is being developed in partnership with Douglas and Angus Estates and would have a capacity of up to 500MW.
Strategically located adjacent to Scottish Power Transmission’s planned 400kV Redshaw substation, BayWar r.e. says the BESS will play a vital role in strengthening the UK’s renewable energy infrastructure.
By storing excess energy and releasing it when demand is high, the project will contribute to grid stability, enhance energy security and improve overall network efficiency.
BayWa r.e. UK’s head of development, strategy and origination Gemma Hamilton said: “Submitting our Redshaw BESS Section 36 application is a big step forward for this important development.
“By locating large-scale storage systems in strategic locations, ensuring optionality around future technology, and developing strong local partnerships, we are creating an energy solution that will make a significant contribution to the drive towards net zero.
“This initiative highlights our commitment to investing purposefully in essential technologies that support a cleaner, more sustainable future.”
If approved, the project will provide long-term local benefits through an annual contribution to a community benefit fund.
This funding will be available to support local initiatives and developments throughout the project’s 40-year operational lifespan.
