UK renewables developer Firstway Energy has secured planning approvals for two new grid-scale battery energy storage projects.
The approved BESS projects have a combined power capacity of 200MW and a two-hour duration.
One of the 100MW projects is located at Gammton Barton in Bideford, while the other will be based at Murton Way, York (site plan pictured).
Planning permission for the BESS facilities was granted by Torridge District Council and City of York Council respectively.
These approvals mark Firstway Energy’s 10th and 11th BESS planning consents within the past 12 months, bringing the company’s total consented pipeline to more than 1070MW of grid-scale energy storage capacity.
Firstway said it will continue to work closely with distribution network operators and the National Energy System Operator (NESO) to accelerate grid connection timelines, with an aim to bring both projects online ahead of 2029.
Firstway Energy’s planning director Steven Gough said: “Both decisions reflect the weight of national and local policy support for infrastructure which supports the transition to clean energy and the recognition by decisionmakers of the widespread public benefit which these projects deliver.”
