Amazon steps up renewables mission in Spain

WFW advises Natixis on 1.2GW Spanish solar portfolio

Amazon has invested in 17 new solar and wind projects in Spain, in addition to its first renewable energy project in Portugal.

The company said these new projects are part of its effort to match the electricity used in its operations and data centres with renewable energy, in a bid to meet its goal of achieving net zero by 2040.

In Spain, Amazon has enabled a total of 94 solar and wind projects that will provide more than 3.7GW of clean energy, enough capacity to power the equivalent of more than 2.3 million Spanish homes per year.

These renewable energy projects include 63 large-scale solar and wind farms.

Amazon’s head of energy in EMEA Lindsay McQuade said: “At Amazon, we are committed to providing the necessary infrastructure and services to our customers, while continuing to work to power our operations more sustainably.

“We are aware that the electrification of our society, together with digitalisation, requires investment in energy sources and networks on which we depend, if we want to take advantage of the full potential of new technologies.

“For this reason, at Amazon we have promoted more than 230 solar and wind projects in Europe, which has made us the largest corporate buyer of renewable energy in Europe and the world in 2024.”

Amazon’s new on-site and off-site renewable projects in Spain include wind farms and solar plants in Aragon, Andalusia, Castilla y León, Catalonia and Extremadura, totalling a combined capacity of more than 870MW.

One of these new projects, a solar plant being developed by Iberdrola in Ciudad Rodrigo (Salamanca), will be one of Amazon’s largest in Spain to date.

Amazon has also inked a deal with Iberdrola to purchase renewable energy from the Tamega Wind Complex in Portugal.
