GreenGo Energy has signed its first African agreement, for the development of a green hydrogen project in Mauritania.

With this agreement now in place, GreenGo Energy has entered the development phase of the project, entailing site and geotechnical surveys, meteorological data collection, and feasibility studies.

The Megaton Moon project adopts a phased approach to scalability, ensuring alignment with market demand and supply chain readiness between 2029 and 2033.

Full capacity will include 6GW of electrolysis, 6.8GW of onshore wind, and 6.3GW of solar.

Phase one, set for completion by the end of 2029, will deploy 500MW of electrolysis, 600MW of onshore wind, and 600MW of solar, producing approximately 339,000 tons of green ammonia annually.

The agreement, signed by Mohamed Khaled (right), Minister of Energy and Petroleum and Karsten Nielsen (left), CEO of GreenGo Energy, grants GreenGo Energy access to more than 100,000 hectares of land near Nouakchott to develop the Megaton Moon Green Hydrogen Project.

“This is a landmark moment for GreenGo Energy and a testament to our commitment to delivering large-scale green hydrogen projects that can reshape communities and economies,” Nielsen said.

He added: “Mauritania’s unique combination of abundant renewable resources, strategic location, and forward-thinking policies – including the enactment of Africa’s first Green Hydrogen Code – positions it as a leader in the global energy transition.

“With highly competitive production costs, the country offers a compelling environment for investment.

“We are honored to play a role in this journey.”

Khaled said: “I am delighted to formalize this framework agreement with the Danish company GreenGo Energy.

“This demonstrates the private sector’s continued confidence in the development of green hydrogen projects in Mauritania despite global uncertainties surrounding demand.”

Mauritania offers unique advantages for green hydrogen production, including “world-class” solar and wind energy potential, coastal access for water desalination and export and production costs up to 50% lower than Northern Europe

The country also has a proven track record of attracting global energy development and is close to European demand centres.
