A power line connecting Finland’s Central Ostrobothnia wind power hub is now part of the country’s main grid, following its purchase by Fingrid, the TSO.
Fingrid has purchased a share of the transmission line between Alajarvi and Lestijarvi from the Lestijarvi electricity network.
As part of the main grid, the transmission line will facilitate the commissioning of new wind and solar power capacity in the area.
Fingrid has purchased a 55 km-long section of the 400kV transmission line connection between Alajarvi and Lestijarvi from Lestijarven Sahkaverkko, which was completed last year.
The transmission line was originally implemented as a connection line for the Lestijarvi wind farm under construction by OX2.
In addition to the Lestijarvi wind farm, there will be other wind and solar farms in Southern, Central and Northern Ostrobothnia.
Fingrid is implementing a new 400kV transmission line for the main grid through the area, which has been named the Lakeus Line.
Due to sufficient transmission capacity, two new 400 kV transmission lines are needed in the main grid.
The second line consists of a connection line purchased as part of the main grid, which Fingrid will continue as a ring network for the new Ullava substation.
“We are planning the electricity network in cooperation with operators in the sector.
“It is possible that the ownership of transmission lines will change if the planning reveals an opportunity to make the use of the grid more efficient by changing ownership.
“Fingrid carries out a few transmission line purchases every year.
“This transaction is exceptionally significant, as it is the first 400 kilovolt line to be purchased by Fingrid,” said Jussi Jyrinsalo, Fingrid’s director of grid services.
The Lestijarvi wind farm built by OX2 will be completed during 2025, after which it will be handed over to its owners Kymppivoima, Oulun Energia and Kuopion Energia.
