AMEA Power has commissioned a 500MW solar plant in Abydos, in Egypt.
Located in the Aswan Governorate, the asset is one of the largest operational solar plants in Africa.
AMEA Power has also signed a power purchase agreement and a land agreement for an additional 500MW wind project in Egypt.
The Abydos solar power plant was completed in 18 months, with 3000 helping to deliver the project.
The project was funded by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the Netherlands Development Finance Corporation (FMO) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Hussain Al Nowa’s, Chairman of AMEA Power, said: “I am proud to announce that the 500 MW Abydos solar power plant is now fully operational – an iconic achievement that illustrates the dedication of our team, the strength of collaboration and the importance of empowering local communities.
“This milestone reflects AMEA Power’s technical excellence and sets a new benchmark for renewable energy projects.
“The solar power plant represents a major step forward in Egypt’s renewable energy strategy, supporting the goal of achieving 42% of energy production from renewable sources by 2030. Together, we are advancing a sustainable future.
In September 2024, AMEA Power was awarded two new major projects in Egypt.
The first, a 1000MW solar plant with a 600MWh battery energy storage system (BESS), will become the largest project of its kind in Africa once commissioned.
The second, a 300MWh BESS, is an extension of the 500MW Abydos solar power plant. This project will mark the pioneering use of a utility-scale BESS solution in Egypt.
In addition, the 500MW Amunet wind farm, located in Ras Ghareb, is under construction and is expected to be operational in the first quarter of 2025.
