LS Cable & System has completed the Jeju-3 HVDC Link in South Korea.
The 90km link connects the Wando Converter Station and the Dongjeju Converter Station in Jeju Province.
The island of Jeju receives much of its power from the mainland. Two high voltage direct current (HVDC) links already transport 700 megawatts of electricity from the peninsula 100 kilometres away.
The link is the largest submarine cable in South Korea, since the second Jeju link cable, and will provide an additional 200 MW of power to boost supply and stabilize the Dongjeju power grid.
The project uses Hitachi Energy’s voltage source conversion (VSC) technology, and will enable the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) to operate the island’s other interconnections more efficiently, according to Hitachi.
