Oman picks developers for five wind projects

First power from 50MW Oman desert giant

Oman’s Nama Power and Water Procurement Company (PWP) has announced 16 qualified developers to construct five large-scale wind energy projects.

The list includes ACWA Power, Masdar and Sumitomo.

The five sites, with a total capacity of over 850MW, are located across key governorates and are valued at OR500m (€1.1bn).

The wind Independent Power Projects (IPPs) will contribute to the Sultanate’s broader strategy to generate 30% of its energy needs from renewable sources by 2030.

The 91MW-105MW Jalan Bani bu Ali Wind IPP will be located in Jalan Bani Bu Ali in South Sharqiyah Governate for commercial operation in first quarter 2027.

The 234MW-270MW Duqm Wind IPP will be located in Ras Madrakah in Duqm for commercial operation in fourth quarter 2027.

The 342MW-400MW Mahoot Wind 1 IPP will be developed in Mahoot in Al Wusta Governate for commercial operation in fourth quarter 2027.

The Dhofar Wind 2 IPP will be adjacent to the existing Dhofar Wind I IPP in Shaleem and Al Hallaniyat Islands in Dhofar Governate and will have a capacity of 114MW-132MW and will be operational in second quarter 2027.

Sadah Wind IPP will be developed at a site located in Sadah in Dhofar Governate with a capacity of 81-99MW for commercial operation in fourth quarter 2027.

A total of 16 Statements of Qualification were submitted for the Jaalan Bani Bu Ali Wind IPP, 15 for the Dhofar 2 Wind IPP, 15 for the Duqm and Sadah Wind IPPs, and 15 for the Mahoot 1 Wind IPP.

Following a comprehensive and rigorous evaluation process, 11 applicants were qualified for Jaalan Bani Bu Ali Wind IPP, 12 for the Dhofar 2 Wind IPP, 12 for the Mahoot 1 Wind IPP, and 12 each for the Duqm and Sadah Wind IPPs.

The 12 qualified applications are ACWA Power, Sembcorp, Sumitomo, TotalEnergies, Masdar, Al Fanar, EDF Renouvelables, Elecnor, Goldwind, GED and Marafiq, Hero Asia Investment and Itochu.
