Vestas wins 144MW Greek prize

RWE has signed two power purchase agreements (PPAs) with Microsoft for supplies from two wind farms in Texas with a total capacity of 446MW.

The 15-year PPAs will support the technology giant’s goal of achieving 100% coverage of electricity consumption with renewable energy by 2025.

Following the deals, RWE has broken ground on the 243MW Peyton Creek 2 wind farm and made the investment decision to build the Lane City project.

RWE Clean Energy chief executive Andrew Flanagan said: “We are excited to be working with Microsoft to provide the clean electricity they need to achieve its sustainability goals.

“Together, we’re united in our efforts to deliver a clean energy future. As a growing green business, we are committed to driving our renewable targets, supporting local communities grow sustainably.”

To build the Peyton Creek 2 RWE has brought together Vestas, Wanzek Construction and RES.

RWE will use the V163 4.5MW turbines from Vestas North America and has enlisted Wanzek and RES to lead construction activities at Peyton Creek 2 and Lane City.

Peyton Creek 2 is located near RWE’s Peyton Creek 1 wind farm in Bay City, Texas, which has been in operation since March 2020.

Construction of the Lane City project will start this summer.

It has a capacity of 203MW.

Both Peyton Creek 2 and Lane City are expected to generate between 250-300 jobs each during construction and 20 full-time jobs once operational.

Additionally, Peyton Creek 2 will provide approximately $300m to the local tax base in Matagorda County and Lane City will provide $300m to the local tax base in Wharton County.
