Finland is preparing a tender to develop two offshore wind projects with a combined capacity of 3000MW.
The Edith site is located in the sea area belonging to Narpio, and the Ebba scheme is located in the sea areas off Pyhajoki and Raahe.
The country’s State Council has made a decision in principle to start the auction procedure for Finland’s public water areas in five offshore wind power areas.
Land management body Metsahallitus will immediately start a commercial tendering process in which developers for two sites will be selected.
The regional municipalities have approved the zoning initiatives for the projects and the preliminary studies of the schemes initiated by Metsahallitus are progressing.
Completion of tenders for the other three areas will be confirmed during 2024. The competition will last approximately one year.
When realised, the investment value of the projects is estimated to be €6bn-€8bn in total.
Once completed, the projects are estimated to produce a total of up to 14TWh of clean electricity annually, which would currently cover more than 17% of Finland’s electricity consumption.
“The government’s decision comes at a good time and is a concrete step forward to increase the production of offshore wind power in Finland in the early 2030s. We will continue our determined work to enable clean energy production in accordance with the goals of Finland’s green transition,” says Metsahallitus chief executive Juha Niemela.
