Acciona, Plug unveil Spanish green hydrogen project

Acciona Energia and Plug Power have presented to the Government of Navarra a joint green hydrogen project in Rocaforte, Spain.

The Valle H2V project, still in the development phase, proposes the construction of a 25MW electrolyser on the land adjacent to the Sangüesa biomass plant, powered by hybrid renewable energy produced by a photovoltaic plant (25MW) and a wind farm (24MW).

The solar and wind farms are also in development.

The Valle H2V Navarra project plans to start generating green hydrogen by the end of 2024, allowing the government of Navarra to comply with the Navarra Green Hydrogen Agenda, a roadmap for the development of a green hydrogen ecosystem.

The roadmap foresees the installation of between 10MW and 30MW of production by 2024 and 150MW by 2030 in the autonomous community.

The Valle H2V Navarra project is being developed by Acciona Plug, a joint venture company formed 50% by Acciona Energia and Plug Power, a provider of electrolysers, fuel cells, forklifts and liquefaction.

The joint venture is based in Madrid.

The plans of Acciona Plug amount to a total associated investment of €87m and could create more than 500 direct, indirect and induced jobs during the construction phase of the plant.

Around 90% of the hydrogen produced is destined for consumption by the main energy-intensive industries in the area, such as paper, glass, steel, food and automotive, as well as for Plug Power customers in the field of material handling, stationary energy and road mobility applications.

The remaining 10% will go to the transport sector through the installation of a hydrogenerator in the same location.

The plant’s electrolyser capacity could be doubled in future, depending on demand for hydrogen.

The President of Navarra, María Chivite, announced that the Regional Executive, in its session tomorrow, will declare the Valle H2V Navarra project of regional interest, which will accelerate its processing and development.

“Valle H2V Navarra was born with the aim of being the first green hydrogen generation plant operating on an industrial scale in the Autonomous Community and to give a qualitative and quantitative boost to the decarbonization of the region’s industry,” said Rafael Mateo, president of Acciona Plug and CEO of Acciona Energia.

“In addition, this project is of particular interest thanks to its scalability and replicability, as it will provide an operational example of the contribution of green hydrogen in the energy transition.”
