RWE has won a solar tender from Germany’s Federal Network Agency to construct a project at the Hambach opencast mine.
The 16.8MW RWE Neuland 1 Solarpark will comprise around 37,000 solar modules.
The new photovoltaic system is to be built in the future shore area of the planned Hambach opencast mining lake.
Subject to the granting of the building permit, RWE could start work in summer 2023.
Katja Wünschel, chief executive for onshore wind and solar in Europe & Australia at RWE Renewables said: “The success of the auction gives us tailwind for the realization of another solar plant in the Hambach opencast mine.
“It is already the fifth major solar project that we are initiating in the Rhenish mining area. Most of them in combination with storage.
“This is how we are advancing the energy transition in the region.”
