TenneT has launched a new grid initiative deploying offshore wind capacity to reduce grid bottlenecks.
Effective immediately, TenneT will redispatch 17 offshore wind farms in the North Sea with a total output of 4.5GW.
The Redispatch 2.0 initiative enables TenneT to use this capacity alongside that of conventional power plants in order to relieve the grid, reducing bottlenecks.
Previously, this was only possible as a last measure via feed-in management.
TenneT chief operations officer Tim Meyerjurgens said: “As of today, the output of around four large power plants for Redispatch 2.0 in TenneT’s control area is available at once.
“This is a big step towards making the electricity system more flexible overall and further equipping it for the growing challenges of the energy transition.
“We would like to thank the more than 40 companies such as wind farm operators, those responsible for operations, IT service providers and direct marketers for the close cooperation.”
In the future, all storage and generation systems that are larger than 100kW will be included in Redispatch 2.0, involving more than one thousand players in the process, including transmission and distribution system operators, marketers, plant operators and authorities.
