The Netherlands is planning to add just under 11GW of extra offshore wind capacity by 2030, almost doubling its current goal for the end of the decade.
A draft ‘Additional Design Programme North Sea 2022-2027’ outlines plans to realise a further 10.7GW by 2030, on top of the 11.5GW already planned and raising the overall goal to 22.2GW.
The programme, published by Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, said the increase is needed to meet the country’s 55% greenhouse gas emission reduction target for 2030.
The areas for expansion are IJmuiden Ver North, the southern part of Hollandse Kust West, and wind energy areas 1, 2 and 5 East.
These areas offer maximum space for 16.7GW of wind energy in total, which “offers sufficient flexibility to be able to realise a maximum of 10.7GW within that space in the period up to and including 2030”, the ministry said.
