UPDATE: RWE proposes 270MW floater for French tender

UPDATE: RWE proposes 270MW floater for French tender

RWE Renewables has been selected as an eligible bidder for an up to 270MW floating wind farm off the coast of south Brittany in the upcoming French tender.

The project is sited off the island Belle-Ile and Ile de Groix in water depths of approximately 90 metres.

The final floating design for the project would be determined during the development phase, RWE Renewables said.

The developer said it would closely cooperate with local stakeholders and national supply chain partners to deliver local benefits, jobs and investments, while investing in new renewable energy.

Earlier today the French Government selected candidates to submit tenders to build floating wind farms, totalling 750MW, off the coast of Brittany.

The tender outlines two sites, one which is 250MW in capacity and the other, which is up to 500MW as well as their shared connection.

The government has pre-selected 10 candidates, who are eligible to participate in the competitive tender.

The candidates are a consortium formed by CIP and ENI, Eoliennes Flottantes Bretagne Grand Large (EDF Renewables and Maple Power), a consortium formed by Elicio and BayWa r.e., Equinor, Iberdrola, Ocean Winds, RWE, a consortium formed by Shell, Valeco (a subsidiary of EnBW) and Eolien en Mer Participations (a subsidiary of the Caisse des depots et consignations), a consortium formed by TotalEnergies, Green Investment Group and Qair and a consortium formed by WPD, Vattenfall and BlueFloat Energy.

The announcement of the winners is scheduled for 2022.

Commissioning is envisaged for 2029.

The projects, to be located off the coast of southern Brittany, were the subject of a public debate organised by the National Commission for Public Debate (CNDP) last year.

The first 250MW project will be the ninth offshore wind project in France and one of the first projects using floating technology in Europe.

Elicio and BayWa have confirmed they will submit a bid for an offshore wind farm, with a capacity of 250MW, as has the Vattenfall, WPD and BlueFloat Energy consortium.

BW Ideol has entered into a partnership agreement with EDF Renewables and Maple Power to cooperate on the design of the technical solution for the floating foundations as part of the consortium’s bid.
