Orsted seeks views on Hornsea 3 battery plans

Heirs take swing at Orsted

Orsted is launching a public consultation in relation to an energy storage project linked to the Hornsea 3 offshore wind farm.

The consultation, running to 24 September, concerns proposals to install a utility-scale energy storage system within the previously consented footprint of the Hornsea 3 substation.

The battery project will cross-utilise part of the existing planned infrastructure to maximise the use of the site, for example, the permanent site access, sustainable drainage systems, internal roads and vehicle parking.

As a result, the project is not proposed to occupy any additional space than previously consented within the Hornsea 3 Offshore Wind Farm Order Limits.

Orsted said it would plan to deliver the development within the same construction programme window (36 months maximum) with the aim of limiting disruption to the local community and road users.

The company said it is “actively consulting with the community” about its plans as it prepares and finalises the proposal.

The proposals include information on energy-balancing infrastructure; the project; the commissioned surveys and reports; the maps and plans; elements of the detailed design; and the landscape visualisations and can be found on Orsted’s website.

The developer said input would be “especially welcome” on the design integration aspects of the project (look and feel, materials and colours) and landscaping plans (fencing and vegetation), as these will feed directly into the detailed design of the project.

It has provided some examples of the elements and types of choices that the detailed design process will consider but is not committing to the examples provided at this stage.
