EEW Special Pipe Constructions has received an order from Iberdrola to manufacture 50 monopile foundations for the 476MW Baltic Eagle offshore wind farm.
For the order EEW SPC will process about 64,600 tonnes of steel starting with production in January 2022 and lasting for a year.
The deal was first reported by subscriber-only reNEWS on 6 November last year.
Spanish company Windar will fabricate the same number of transition pieces for the monopiles.
The monopiles will be fabricated at EEW’s mega-factory in Rostock, located by the Baltic Sea.
The foundations will have a diameter between 8.75-9 metres and a maximum length of 90 metres.
The heaviest monopiles will weigh 1402 tonnes.
Baltic Eagle is located 28 kilometres to the northeast of Rugen island off the coast of Pomerania, Germany.
“We see Iberdrola as an important strategic customer for worldwide offshore wind projects and therefore we are very pleased to be able to execute with Baltic Eagle OWF the first direct project with Iberdrola,” said Heiko Mutzelburg, CEO of EEW SPC.
Iris Stempfle, Iberdrola`s country manager in Germany said: “We are happy for EEW SPC GmbH supporting us in this important project Baltic Eagle as an internationally leading manufacturer of monopiles.
“By creating a Baltic Hub with 826MW, Iberdrola is contributing to Europe`s green recovery and local value creation on our home turf Mecklenburg-Vorpommern by securing important know-how directly at site.”
For the project thermal-sprayed-aluminium (TSA) will be applied for corrosion protection.
The monopiles will be coated with a layer of aluminium including sealing with epoxy (synthetic resin), negating the need for additional cathodic protection.
Baltic Eagle is scheduled to be fully operational by end of 2024.
