Repsol JV progresses at 189MW Chilean wind farm

Spanish energy company Repsol and Grupo Ibereolica Renovables has started work on the second 110MW phase of the 189MW Cabo Leones 3 wind farm in Chile, with the first 79MW stage having come online last month.

Nacelles for the 22 Siemens Gamesa 145-5MW turbines for phase two left the port of Bilbao in Spain today for South America.

They were assembled at the Siemens Gamesa plant in Agreda near Soria, which employs close to 200 people.

The second stage is expected online in the second quarter of this year.

Cabo Leones 3 is located in the Chilean province of Huasco in the Atacama region.

It is part of a portfolio of projects in Chile being developed by a joint venture of Repsol and Grupo Ibereolica Renovables that was formed in July 2020.

Phase one of the project features 22 Siemens Gamesa 132-3.6MW machines.

The JV has a portfolio of assets in operation, construction, and advanced development of more than 1.6GW, with commercial operation dates up until 2023.

The portfolio has the possibility of surpassing 2.6GW by 2030, Repsol said.

Repsol chief executive Josu Jon Imaz said: “Committing to industry means committing to a rapid and stable economic recovery.

“With projects like this one, a wind farm in Chile that is also generating economic activity in our country, we are consolidating our position as an important player in the reduction of emissions and as a company that is contributing to the country’s industrial development.”
