A new report aims to reveal “significant untapped potential and value” for companies that install solar or other forms for renewables and energy storage on commercial and industrial buildings or premises.
RE-Source Platform, which provides information on corporate renewable energy purchasing, has published the report.
The company says that with the right enabling framework, on-site renewable electricity generation and storage can help companies to increase their renewable electricity procurement in Europe and meet emissions reduction targets.
The report describes innovative on-site business models that companies can benefit from and provides recommendations to EU and national policymakers to unlock the potential of on-site renewables and storage.
Ingka Group climate and energy head Karol Gobczynski said: “Collaboration has always been a cornerstone of the IKEA way of working – this is more important now than ever in order to tackle the climate crisis.
“This report is a great example of collaboration between multiple companies and organisations through RE-Source Platform to share experiences and provide recommendations on how to enable everyday energy consumers to become everyday prosumers.
“Governments have an opportunity to engage with companies and individuals to play active roles in creating net-zero society, through distributed energy generation.”
“This report lays out a clear path to help corporates achieve their climate goals by capitalising on on-site renewable electricity and storage.
“We must utilise all renewable energy options available to achieve a climate-neutral Europe.
“With ambition, cooperation, and creativity, we can make Europe a global leader for corporate sourcing, and corporates a key part of Europe’s green future.”
SolarPower Europe senior policy advisor Merce Labordena added: “As part of RE-Source, I am proud to contribute to the development of this report, which is an important addition to the discussion on corporate renewable energy sourcing in Europe.
“To achieve an energy system based on 100% renewables by 2050, the opportunity for on-site renewable electricity and storage for corporates must be fully understood and utilised.
“The business models and policy framework put forward here will enable corporates to take the next step towards embracing renewables as an invaluable and daily part of their operations.”
