Hornsea 2 hires chopper squad

Orsted has awarded CHC Helicopter a contract for aerial transportation during the construction and operations phases of its 1400MW Hornsea 2 offshore wind farm off the Yorkshire coast in England.

CHC will use Leonardo AW139 and AW169 helicopters from Humberside Airport in Lincolnshire for crew transfers and cargo flights to both the offshore accommodation jack-up barge and installation vessels during the project’s the 18-month build phase.

CHC opened a helicopter terminal and personnel handling facility located at Humberside airport last year.

“We are continually adapting and improving the way we work as we construct our sustainable offshore projects whilst the safety of our personnel remains of paramount importance to us,” said Orsted senior construction project manager Jason Ledden.

“Having provided heli-services for Hornsea 1 offshore wind farm during its construction phase, CHC have a proven track record in this area and as such, we are pleased to work alongside partners who share our attitude towards safety and collaboration.”

CHC and UniFly are already delivering flight operations during the first five years of operations and maintenance at the neighbouring 1.2GW Hornsea 1 project.

CHC regional director for the EMEA region Mark Abbey: “I am delighted that we are able to continue to support Orsted on this landmark project. It is a real privilege.

“CHC’s long-term strategy is to broaden our range of services to the energy market and continue to grow our renewables service alongside our oil and gas, and search and rescue service.”

Hornsea 2 is due online in 2022 and will feature 165 Siemens Gamesa 8MW turbines.
