Offshore wind turbine manufacturer MHI Vestas has completed the first chapter of its sustainability strategy for the 2018-2022 period.
The company said the first stage focussed on building a strong foundation for its growth and global expansion.
It is now concentrating on operational performance of existing activities, while executing some new projects and initiatives that have been identified as high priorities for the company.
For example, the company is involved in several projects to cut carbon emissions and increase recyclability, including with the UN and WindEurope.
“Maximising societal value in the markets where we operate has always been a focal point of our business,” MHI Vestas said.
“Our geographical expansion naturally leads to new initiatives being developed to ensure MHI Vestas contributes to the development of local communities,” it said.
To track the company’s progress each year, a third-party organisation assesses the performance on an annual basis.
It is an opportunity for MHI Vestas to benchmark its performance against other companies and provides input for the company’s next steps on its sustainability journey.
“Based on the results from 2019/20, we have decided to aim for a ‘gold medal’ by no later than 2021 and thus be among the top 5% of more than 50,000 assessed companies,” MHI Vestas said.
It added that in future the company will form new partnerships and work hard with all stakeholders to “bring about the changes we all want to see – healthier oceans and a cleaner and more sustainable world”.
MHI Vestas co-chief executives Philippe Kavafyan (pictured) and Johnny Thomsen said: “Our product may be sustainable, but that is not enough – we aim for our entire operation to be sustainable.
“That’s why sustainability is not just something we do, it’s the core of our business – impacting every corner of our global operation.”
