The majority of Europe’s wind turbine and component factories are continuing to operate, with 96% of manufacturing sites still producing, according to trade body WindEurope.
WindEurope said, in its new COVID-19 Wind Information Hub, that currently only seven sites are closed, all of which are located in Spain or Italy.
The two countries currently have the strictest lockdown regulations, it added.
The trade body said the European wind supply chain experienced some disruptions to the supply of components and materials from China in February, but now Chinese component and material supply is ramping back up again.
WindEurope said it had launched the information hub in “response to dynamic developments around the pandemic”.
The hub aims to detail all impacts of COVID-19 on the wind supply chain, changes in government energy policies and government measures to support the industry, it added.
WindEurope chief executive Giles Dickson said: “COVID-19 shows the vital importance of a reliable electricity supply for our societies.
“And how critical it is that we continue doing operation and maintenance on existing wind farms and continue with construction and manufacturing.
“For now activity continues in 96% of the wind manufacturing sites across Europe with plant closures concentrated in Spain and Italy.
“The full European supply chain is affected by restrictions to the free movement of goods and workers and uncertainty on energy policy and the broader economy.
“Our information hub centralises developments on how COVID-19 is impacting the wind industry and how Governments are addressing the crisis.”
The hub can be found here.
