German transmission system operator 50Hertz reported a record day for wind energy on 22 February driven by stormy weather in Germany.
The TSO said between 6.30pm and 6.45pm 16,270MW of wind power was fed into the company’s grid area.
At the same time, only 460MW had to be curtailed, it added.
“Never before has so much wind power been absorbed into our system and so few wind turbines had to be shut down,” 50Hertz said.
The majority of the electricity generated was transported in a north-south direction and almost completely used, the company said.
The previous record was recorded on 4 March 2019, when 16,217MW of wind energy flowed into the grid, but about 1300MW had to be curtailed, it added.
50 Hertz managing director markets and system operations Dirk Biermann said: “This extremely good relationship between feed-in and curtailment shows that the measures we have taken to increase the performance and optimise our network are working.
“In addition, the operators of conventional lignite and hard coal power plants can now operate their plants much more flexibly, so that their generation can be shut down in strong winds and make room for wind power from the northeast.”
