Swedish developer OX2 is to sell the 132MW Metsalamminkangas wind farm in northern Finland to Lundin Petroleum for an undisclosed price.

Metsalamminkangas will comprise 24 GE 5.5MW Cypress turbines with total heights of 220 and 230 metres.

The turbines will be equipped with GE’s ice mitigation system in order to endure icing conditions for substantial parts of the year.

Installation of the turbines, which will be equipped with GE’s ice mitigation system, will start in the second quarter of 2021.

GE will also provide servicing under a multi-year contract.

Metsalamminkangas will be constructed in the municipality of Vaala in North Ostrobothnia and will produce about 440 gigawatt-hours a year when commissioned in December 2021.

OX2 said the site has an average wind speed of approx. 7.2 metres a second at the turbines’ hub height.

Suvic will carry out construction work and internal electricity networks, VEO will deliver the transformer substation and Kajave the grid connection.

OX2 is constructing the wind farm as an EPC contract and will have responsibility for the technical and commercial management of the project.

Lundin Petroleum president and chief executive Alex Schneiter said: “We are very pleased to be partnering with OX2 on this project.

“Alongside our existing hydroelectricity project in Norway, the Metsalamminkangas wind farm will enable us to replace a big share of our net electricity usage, powering our offshore Norway oil and gas production facilities.”

OX2 chief executive Paul Stormoen said: “This is our largest project to date in Finland, which has become one of the fastest growing markets for wind energy investment in Europe. We are pleased that we can offer an attractive non-fossil investment for Lundin Petroleum.”

GE chief executive for onshore wind in Europe Peter Wells said: “OX2 is one of the biggest developers of wind farms in the Nordic region, and we are thrilled they’ve selected our brand-new Cypress platform.

“Our goal is to help our customers drive energy costs down every day, and Cypress is ideally suited to make the best use of the country’s wind speed and landscape.”

Metsalamminkangas is the third largest wind farm to be constructed in Finland and its being built without government subsidies.

OX2 is currently constructing projects totalling 1.2GW, including seven wind farms of approximately 340MW in Finland.
