Germany added 1100MW of new offshore wind to the grid in 2019, according to new figures.
Some 160 turbines were installed during the 12 months, said annual research published today by Deutsche WindGuard.
The hardware brings the German national fleet to 7.5GW.
“Electricity from offshore wind energy is cost-effective, reliable and constantly competitive,” said a joint statement by industry associations to coincide with the release of the research.
However, the groups pointed out that the market is in for a number of fallow years with little or no new megawatts to be added until 2023.
A 2GW special tender is required to offset any damage that this may do to the local supply chain and Berlin must legally underpin a 20GW by 2030 target, said the representative associations.
“Any further loss of time could result in additional job losses and jeopardize the international competitiveness of German companies,” said the joint statement by BWO, BWE, Stiftung Offshore Wind Energy, VDMA and WAB.
“The know-how acquired in the offshore wind industry is an important edge in international competition. We still need a strong domestic market in order to remain successful in the ever-growing world market.”
The groups have also called for new targets of up to 35GW by 2035 and more than 50GW by 2050.
