First power has been delivered from the 25MW WindFloat Atlantic floating offshore wind farm off the coast of Portugal.
The first of three MHI Vestas 8.4MW was connected on 31 December and is supplying electricity to the Portuguese grid, the developers said.
WindFloat Atlantic is being developed by the Windplus consortium of EDP Renewables, Engie, Repsol and Principle Power.
Principle Power chief executive Joao Metelo said: “The commissioning of the WindFloat Atlantic project demonstrates the maturity and commercial readiness of floating offshore wind technology.
“As the first bank-financed floating wind farm in the world, it proves the financial viability of floating technology and provides new opportunities for sustainable investment.
“Wide deployment of this game-changing technology around the world would strengthen energy security and help governments tackle climate crisis quickly and at scale, while creating jobs and fostering economic growth.”
The news comes just days after the Windplus consortium announced that the second of the three platforms that will make up the wind farm sailed to its final destination off the coast of Viana do Castelo.
The first floating turbine was installed in October.
