More electricity was delivered from non-fossil fuel sources in the UK than from fossil fuels for the first time ever in 2019, according to data from National Grid.
Wind, solar and hydro accounted for 26.5% of electricity, with biomass and waste-to-energy a further 8.2% and nuclear 16.8%.
Natural gas provided 38.4%, coal 2.1% and imports via subsea interconnectors 8.0%, the company said.
National Grid chief executive John Pettigrew said: “As we enter a new decade, this truly is a historic moment and an opportunity to reflect on how much has been achieved.
“At National Grid, we know we have a critical role in the acceleration towards a cleaner future and are committed to playing our part in delivering a safe and secure energy system that works for all.”
