Western US utility PacifiCorp has published a 20-year blueprint setting out plans to add around 7GW of new renewables and storage capacity by 2025.
The Washington company’s draft preferred portfolio for its 2019 Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) includes more than 3.5GW of new wind generation, 3GW of solar and 600MW by the middle of the next decade.
The roadmap includes 1.92GW of additional new wind generation in Wyoming by 2024 on top of around 1.5GW already under construction.
PacifiCorp said the 2019 draft IRP identifies battery storage as part of a least-cost portfolio for the first time.
All of the storage resources planned by 2025 are paired with new solar generation.
“With a focus on lower-cost renewable resources and strategic transmission investments, this plan allows us to continue to deliver the reliable and low-cost energy our customers need as we embark on a phased and well-managed coal transition,” said PacifiCorp vice president of resource planning and acquisitions Rick Link.
PacifiCorp will file its final 2019 IRP with state regulatory commissions by October 18.
