Last turbine stands at Hornsea 1

Orsted has installed the last of 174 Siemens Gamesa 7MW turbines to feature at its 1200MW Hornsea 1 project off the Yorkshire coast in the UK.

Deme Offshore vessel Sea Challenger and Fred Olsen jack up Bold Tern installed the 190-metre tall hardware, which features 75 metre-long blades, at the project.

Turbine installation at the project’s 407 kilometre-square array began in January.

The project will now undergo a period of commissioning before being officially inaugurated next year, Orsted said.

“The milestone of this last turbine being installed only nine months after the first one was erected is just one small part of this record-breaking project,” Hornsea 1 programme director Duncan Clarke said.

“At the time of taking on the project, it’s scale and the technical pioneering required seemed a Herculean challenge, but a truly extraordinary effort from all those involved have managed to make this impressive feat of engineering the new norm.”

Offshore construction at the project began in January 2018 when Deme Offshore jack-up Innovation installed the first foundation at the project.

Orsted said more than 8000 people had been involved in the construction phase of the project.

“We have benefited from fantastic working relationships with contractors, suppliers and vessel providers who have maintained a constant stream of communication to ensure that turbine installation has been concluded on time and within budget,” Clarke added.
