Google has made what the internet giant claims to be the biggest ever corporate purchase of renewable energy.
The US company has secured a 1.6GW package consisting of 18 power purchase agreements in wind and solar across Europe and the Americas.
The PPAs include 720MW of US solar – 155MW in North Carolina, 75MW in South Carolina and 490MW in Texas – more than doubling the capacity of its global PV portfolio.
The package also includes a “hybrid technology deal” that combines 125MW of wind and solar to supply Google’s data centre in Chile.
European Energy said it has signed two multi-year deals with Google for electricity from the 55MW Roedbyfjord and 27MW Naessundvej solar farms in Denmark.
Further details on the European PPAs are expected to be revealed today.
Google chief executive Sundar Pichai said the deals will increase its global wind and solar by more than 40% to 5.5GW.
“Our latest agreements will spur the construction of more than $2bn in new energy infrastructure, including millions of solar panels and hundreds of wind turbines spread across three continents,” he added.
“In all, our renewable energy fleet now stands at 52 projects, driving more than $7bn in new construction.”
