Grid operator TenneT has gained planning approval for its Emden-Conneforde link in Germany to expand the grid to support renewables integration.
Construction work will begin immediately on the 60km 389kV transmission line in northern Germany.
The cable will run from Emden through the districts of Aurich, Leer, Friesland and Ammerland and will be installed underground in two sections, in Strackholt and Bredehorn, totalling 5km.
Commissioning is scheduled for 2021.
The existing 220kV line between Emden and Conneforde will be dismantled.
TenneT managing director Tim Meyerjurgens said: “The decision marks another important milestone for the successful implementation of the energy transition.
“The new pipeline supports the transport of renewable energy to the high-consumption regions and thus contributes to greater security of supply.”
