Duke Energy is developing a 350MW expansion of its Frontier 1 wind farm in Oklahoma, US, which will result in a 550MW capacity facility when complete in late 2020.
The company will prepare to build Frontier 2, in Kay County, later this summer, extending the 200MW Frontier 1 wind farm, operational since 2016.
Nordex Group will supply 74 4.8MW turbines for the project.
“We are pleased to be working together with Duke Energy Renewables and particularly looking forward to working with one of the most experienced project developers in the US,” said Nordex group chief sales officer Patxi Landa.
North American drinks packaging company Ball Corporation has signed a 15-year virtual power purchase agreement (PPA) for 161MW of the wind farm’s output, while another undisclosed corporation has signed a virtual PPA for an additional 160MW.
Duke Energy president Rob Caldwell said: “Frontier 2 will deliver clean energy for Oklahoma and significant economic benefits to the area.
“We’re pleased to be working with the Ball Corporation on the Frontier 2 project, which will be located in an area that has some of the best wind resources in the country.”
Ball was advised on the Frontier 2 virtual PPA by Schneider Electric Energy and Sustainability Services, which assisted the company in its project selection and negotiations.
During peak construction, the project will create approximately 250 jobs, Duke said.
Amshore US Wind provided development support for the project, and Wanzek Construction is the contractor.
