Irish developer ESB and UK onshore wind partner Coriolis Energy have won the right to develop the around 50MW Y Bryn project in south Wales.
The duo was awarded the wind farm development rights by Natural Resources Wales via a tender launched in June 2018.
The tender attracted a total of 10 companies to bid for the lease on an area of land in the Neath Port Talbot-Bridgend border within TAN8 strategic search area F.
ESB and Coriolis will survey the land for a potential wind farm development on Welsh government woodland estate managed by NRW.
Following the surveys, the developers will need to apply for planning permission to construct the project.
“I’m pleased the successful bid has a strong community benefit which will enable local people to buy into the scheme,” said Welsh government environment, energy and rural affairs secretary Lesley Griffiths.
“This approach will ensure that money generated from the scheme will stay in the local community,” she added.
NRW said other technologies were considered in the Y Bryn proposals, including battery storage, solar and hydro, but a wind farm was identified as the most feasible scheme.
ESB owns the 34.5MW Mynydd y Betws wind farm (pictured) located between Swansea and Carmarthenshire in south Wales, which has been operational since 2013.
