Tennet has commissioned Arcadis and Pondera to carry out environmental impact assessment (EIA) work and permit applications for grid infrastructure for the planned 4GW Ijmuiden Ver offshore wind farm.
Tennet’s offshore grid consists of two direct current cables each bringing 2GW of wind energy from the site to land.
Via a converter station at sea, and submarine cables, the electricity from Ijmuiden Ver will arrive at a converter station on land that converts the direct current into alternating current, which is then fed into the Netherlands’ high-voltage network.
Pondera director and co-founder Hans Rijntalder said: “The challenge here is to find a good balance between future-proof technical solutions, environmental effects, costs and good spatial integration in consultation with the environment.”
Arcadis general manager Gert Kroon said: “Partly, as a result of this collaboration, we are helping Tennet to achieve the challenging time schedule for the deployment of offshore wind energy. “
