South Lanarkshire Council has approved Banks Renewables plans to use bigger wind turbines at its consented 75MW Kype Muir 2 project in Scotland.
The variation of consent application to build 15 machines with a tip height of up to 220 metres instead of a maximum of 152m will now be passed to the Scottish Government’s Energy Consents Unit for final approval.
The Kype Muir extension project was originally consented in January 2017 as a 72MW project consisting of 18 turbines.
The latest iteration given the nod by South Lanarkshire Council comprises four turbines with 220m tips, four with 200m, three with 176m and four with 156m.
“Our amended plans will allow us to install the absolute latest turbine technology available and will make the project one of the most efficient in the UK,” said Banks Renewables community relations manager Jeannie Kielty.
She added: “Optimising the efficiency of the turbines in this way means that the site stands the best possible chance of being delivered adding to Scotland’s renewables generation.”
Banks’ Contract for Difference-backed 88.4MW Kype Muir is due to be completed “in the next month or so”, the company said.
