The governments of Canada and Northwest Territories are investing a total of C$40m (€27m) in a project to bring wind energy to remote regions of the North American country.
The Inuvik wind generation project aims to install turbines, a grid controller and battery storage to bring electricity to local indigenous communities via the main electricity network.
The Canadian government will invest C$30m, while Northwest Territories will put up C$10m, as part of the Arctic Energy Fund.
Canadian Minister of Infrastructure and Communities Francois-Philippe Champagne said: “Investments in green infrastructure projects are not only important for our environment, but they also improve the quality of life for those working and living in the North.
“I am proud to announce that the Inuvik wind generation project is the first infrastructure project to be funded under the government of Canada’s Arctic Energy Fund, which supports energy security in northern communities.
“The Inuvik wind generation project will help protect our environment and provide the community with a more efficient and cleaner source of energy.”
